Betty and The Bar Owner (an ongoing story)
by Liz Dubelman
Betty walked home with a swagger, fueled by adrenaline and possibilities. She let her gray hair down. The stars seemed to blaze brighter that night as if applauding her sense of daring. She had sworn off young men. This time, she was determined not to lose money or her sense of self. It was too high a price to pay for companionship, sex, and arm candy.
The following evening, Betty wore her 1980s Norma Kamali Heavy Oversized Dolman Denim Jean Dress with her vintage Frye boots and strutted into the restaurant with a bounce in her step. She could feel all eyes on her as she made her way to the table where the young man sat waiting. In his hand was a bouquet of daisies. This was no ordinary date, but a game between two skilled players. Betty was determined to come out on top, not like the last boyfriend.
He handed her the flowers. She smiled and caught the eye of the server who brought her over a tall glass of water for the flowers.
As they perused the menu, Betty laughed at his jokes and shared stories from her past that she hadn't thought about in years. The young man listened intently, hanging on her every word as if she were the most fascinating person he had ever met.
Betty was unexpectedly charmed by his knowledge of pickled dishes and exotic cuisines. When their food arrived he reached over and helped himself to sample her dish and wine.
“Wow,” he said. “That’s great. Let’s switch plates.”
Although Betty let him take her plate and wine, she knew she would never see him again. She was frankly tired of all the taking. Tomorrow she would rededicate herself to making money.
